Bug Report Form for Issue 16384-13889
Module(s): Search (WebV, CAT)
Release(s) replicated in: 7.2.0, 7.2.4
Last version without bug (if applicable): n/a – replicates back to 6.1
Expected results: Users should be able to find Greek records with alpha, beta or gamma characters.
Actual results: Keyword searches will not retrieve records when searched with alpha, beta or gamma characters.
Replacing those characters with the normalized character(A,B and G respectively) will retrieve the records in keyword searches. Left-anchored and headings searches do not have this issue in Cataloging. Some searches (specifically, TALL) behave differently in Cataloging vs. WebVoyage.
Workflow implications: Greek records cannot be found with keyword searches (or TALL search in WebVoyage) if search terms include alpha, beta or gamma characters.
1. Import and save the attached record.
2. In Cataloging, perform the following searches:
a. Perform a Title< (TALL) search with this term: ?????? – the record will be retrieved.
b. Perform a Boolean search with this term: ?????? – the record will not be retrieved.
c. Replace the Greek alpha character with a latin A and perform the Boolean search again: ??a??? – the record will be retrieved.
d. Perform a Free Text search with this term: ?????? – the record will be retrieved.
3. In WebVoyage, perform the following searches:
a. Perform a TALL search for this term: ?????? – the record will not be retrieved.
b. Replace the Greek alpha character with a latin A and perform the search again: ??a??? – the record will be retrieved.
c. Repeat steps A and B as a GKEY search with the same result.
4. Also worth noting: NAME search on ???????????? in WebVoyage retrieves record. NKEY does not (but replace greek alpha with latin a and it will). This behaves the same in both Cataloging and WebVoyage.
Other information: This is applicable for characters beta (replace with latin B) and gamma (replace with latin G) as well. All three characters normalize differently than other Greek characters, according to NACO normalization rules.
This issue is similar to Issue 18948.
Workaround: Left-anchored and headings searches will find these records with the normalized latin a, b or g – replacing the Greek characters with their respective normalized characters in search statements will retrieve the records.
