Keyword "Exact Title" searches time out and shut down the session

    • Article Type: General
    • Product: Aleph
    • Product Version: 20, 21, 22, 23

    Problem Symptoms:
Keyword "Exact Title" searches time out and shuts down the session.

    Cause:
The xxx01 tab100 AUTO-TRUNCATE-Z01-FIND has a value of "Y". This means that "Exact Title" searches of the z01 Title Browse index include all titles beginning with the characters entered. Thus, very short titles can generate hundreds of thousands of results.

    Resolution:
    1. Change AUTO-TRUNCATE-Z01-FIND=Y to AUTO-TRUNCATE-Z01-FIND=S.

    2. Restart the www server.

    Additional Information

    * Searching for Exact Title "M", along with WAU "fritz lang" in the OPAC is extremely slow, whereas it's OK when searched as a non-exact title.

    * It can be very useful to be able to limit the search on the actual title exactly in cases such as, "Time" magazine and the journal "Science".

    * With AUTO-TRUNCATE-Z01-FIND=Y, the search wau = fritz lang tit = M retrieves all z01_rec_key's for TIT beginning with "M". It's equivalent to the search "m?". There are, of course, thousands of TIT Z01's beginning with "m" and this search usually times out.

    * A search on Exact title "time" gets 380 results in the xxx01 OPAC, including:

    Times future.
    Times like these.
    <etc.>

-- Users searching on exact title expect it to retrieve titles beginning with the word they have entered in -- not all the possible permutations of that word.

    * KB 16384-19329 ("https://knowledge.exlibrisgroup.com/..._response_time") talks about slow response associated with bases with severely truncated search parameters. ("m?" definitely qualifies.)

    * KB 5541 ("Using tab100 AUTO-TRUNCATE-Z01-FIND=Y") discusses the pros and cons of the different settings. As noted there, AUTO-TRUNCATE-Z01-FIND=N has the effect of requiring that word searches on the ISBN index include a wildcard.
